Chamber Music Program

Now in its Seventh Season, Play with the Pros Concerto Competition is a one-of-a-kind partnership with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Our program offers highly individualized, personal instruction from artists of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and rewarding opportunities for performance at the highest caliber.

Description:

  • 2014 required repertoire is "Danse sacrée et Danse profane" by Claude Debussy.
  • Competition to be held on Friday, August 8, 3 PM at the ELM Hall, Arthur Zankel Music Center, Skidmore College.
  • Jury will be comprised of SHC faculty and members of The Philadelphia Orchestra
  • First Prize: Performance with Members of The Philadelphia Orchestra at the 2014 Gala Festival Opening Concert on Sunday, August 10th, $500 Lyon & Healy Award, and a Full-Tuition Scholarship for SHC 2015.
  • Second Prize: $300 Virginia Harp Center Award

Requirements:

  • Apply by May 15, 2014, via our ONLINE APPLICATION.
  • New for 2014: Open to non-SHC participants. Instruments will be available.
  • The concerto must be prepared in its entirety and fully memorized.
  • There is a $50 participation fee for all participants.
  • Application for participation should be made on the ONLINE APPLICATION for the SHC.

SHC PRACTICE RETREAT

SHC Practice Retreat

Welcome to our Second Season of the SHC Practice Retreat! We are pleased to offer personally-designed residencies for the harpist looking for a less-structured SHC experience. Whether you are a professional seeking an environment to help you prepare for the coming season or a mature student honing your skills for the next major competition, the SHC is the right place for you.

  • Two day minimum, $150 a day including room and board.
  • For harpists at least 21 years of age.
  • Private lessons are available and should be requested at the time of application (additional fee required).
  • Participation in most SHC events, to include seminars, mock auditions (participation only; prizes are limited to full SHC participants; comments will be given to ALL participants) and Philadelphia Orchestra concerts.
  • Participation in the Master Teacher Series may be requested contingent on space availability.

  • Please be aware that rental harps may be available but the number of harps is limited and priority will be given to Full SHC participants. The harp rental fee will be determined on your length of stay.

 

ALUMNI HOMECOMING WEEKEND

August 14-17

Come home to Saratoga to help us celebrate our 10th Anniversary Season! Our fabulous weekend will begin with the Alumni Homecoming Weekend Kickoff Party on Thursday night, August 14th, following a 7:00 concert by the incomparable Park Stickney. Unforgettable experiences continue Friday, when you will hear Elizabeth Hainen perform Tan Dun's incredible new harp concerto "Nu Shu: Secret Songs of Women" with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Finally, join the Saratoga Harp Ensemble and play with us on our final concert of the 2014 season, on Saturday afternoon. This fantastic opportunity is only for alumni, and it is not to be missed!

  • Rate of $100/day, including room and board.
  • Deposit deadline of July 1 to confirm attendance.
  • Participation in any events during teh weekend dates, including the harp orchestra dress rehearsal and final concert.
  • Concert ticket included to the Friday night performance by Elizabeth Hainen and The Philadelphia Orchestra of Nu Shu: Secret Songs of Women, composed by Tan Dun.

MOCK AUDITION

New for 2014! All harpists are invited to join us for one day only for our 2014 Mock Audition. This is a wonderful opportunity to perform your orchestral excerpts in a simulated audition environment. Participants will draw numbers and play for a panel of esteemed members of the Saratoga Harp Colony faculty and The Philadelphia Orchestra. An invaluable experience for any harpist interested in an orchestral career.

  • Friday, August 15th, 2:00PM, ELM, Arthur Zankel Music Center.
  • repertoire will be announced in acceptance materials.
  • Apply by May 15 via our ONLINE APPLICATION. .
  • There is a $50 participation fee for non-members.
  • Comments will be available to all participants.
  • Mock Audition participation is included for SHC Full Session participants.
  • Prize: $100 Virginia Harp Center Gift Certificate.
